Government Releases Sonam Wangchuk Amidst Ladakh Tensions.webp

March 14, New Delhi – The Government has decided to release climate activist Sonam Wangchuk from detention, related to the violence that occurred in Leh last September, under the provisions of the National Security Act, as ordered by the District Magistrate of Leh, with the aim of maintaining public order.

The Government has been actively engaging with various stakeholders and community leaders in Ladakh to address the aspirations and concerns of the people in the region. However, the prevailing atmosphere of strikes and protests has been detrimental to the peaceful nature of society and has adversely affected various sections of the community, including students, job seekers, businesses, tour operators, tourists, and the overall economy.

The Government remains committed to fostering an environment of peace, stability, and mutual trust in Ladakh, in order to facilitate constructive and meaningful dialogue with all stakeholders.

The Government reiterates its commitment to providing all necessary safeguards for Ladakh and remains hopeful that the issues concerning the region will be resolved through constructive engagement and dialogue, including through the High-Powered Committee mechanism and other appropriate platforms.
