March 27, New Delhi - The Indian government reduced the additional excise duty on both petrol and diesel in response to growing concerns about a nationwide rise in fuel prices due to the ongoing crisis in the Middle East.
According to a government order, the additional excise duty on petrol was lowered from ₹13 per litre to ₹3 per litre. Meanwhile, the excise duty on diesel was reduced to zero from ₹10 per litre.
This decision comes at a time when concerns are escalating about a potential rise in fuel prices amid rising tensions in the Middle East.
The conflict has impacted global energy infrastructure, as Iran has effectively imposed a blockade on the Strait of Hormuz—a key waterway responsible for shipping 90% of crude oil.
