Itanagar, March 24 Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein handed over e-rickshaws to 40 people in the Namsai district on Tuesday under the Gram Bandu initiative, which aims to boost rural livelihoods while promoting eco-friendly modes of transport.

The initiative is being implemented under the revamped Rashtriya Gram Swaraj Abhiyan (RGSA), and 40 e-rickshaws have been allocated under the pilot phase of the project, with 20 each for Namsai and East Siang districts, according to an official report.

Speaking on the occasion, Mein said the Gram Bandhu initiative will strengthen rural livelihoods by creating sustainable income opportunities while promoting eco-friendly modes of transport.

The introduction of e-rickshaws will generate employment for members of self-help groups, while reducing dependence on fossil fuels, he said.

Emphasizing the environmental significance of the initiative, the deputy chief minister noted that Arunachal Pradesh, known for its pristine rivers and rich natural heritage, must continue to grow in harmony with nature.

Pointing out that rising dependence on petrol and diesel contributes to pollution and puts pressure on the economy due to high import costs, he described electric mobility as a practical and forward-looking solution.

Beyond improving mobility, Mein said the initiative is a step towards economic empowerment, creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for youth while improving last-mile connectivity.

Emphasizing the role of women in the state's development journey, he underscored that empowering women through such livelihood programmes would accelerate inclusive growth at the grassroots level.

Mein urged the beneficiaries to take ownership of the initiative, stressing proper utilization, maintenance, and community participation to ensure long-term sustainability.

Panchayati Raj and Rural Development Minister Ojing Tasing, Namsai MLA Chau Zingnu Namchoom, Namsai zilla parishad chairperson Chau Sujana Namchoom, deputy commissioner CR Khampa, Panchayati Raj director Tajing Jonnomn, were also present at the meeting.
