Green's Balancing Act: IPL Pressure and Australian Expectations.webp

Sydney, March 31 Cameron Green is facing immense pressure both in the IPL and within the Australian cricket setup, but the all-rounder has the ability to succeed and build a "successful career," according to his national coach, Andrew McDonald.

Captain Ajinkya Rahane's comments about Green's injury and inability to bowl in the IPL match against Mumbai Indians had sparked some debate regarding his fitness.

Later, Cricket Australia clarified that the KKR management is "fully aware" of the 26-year-old's back problem, which requires him to be rested from bowling for 10-12 days.

"There is immense pressure within the IPL, and there is also immense pressure on any all-rounder who plays for the Australian team. It's not unfair, but there is an expectation that all-rounders contribute in a certain way," McDonald told SEN Radio.

Considering his all-round abilities, Green was bought by KKR for a staggering ₹25.20 crore, making him the most expensive overseas player in IPL history.

"It's almost like they want him to average 45 with the bat and less than 30 with the ball. And very few players have been able to achieve that. I'm sure that his career will go upwards," McDonald said.

"We know he's good enough. He just needs to manage all these expectations, and particularly, playing all three formats, which is a significant challenge for any cricketer," he added.

However, McDonald said Green's fragile fitness will not be a hindrance when considering him as a multi-format player, particularly in Tests, for Australia.

"I think the answer to that is, yes (multi-format player). I need to discuss this with the selectors. But if you look at the last (Australian) team, Usman (Khawaja) has retired, and he has vacated the No. 5 position," the head coach said.

"But we have (Beau) Webster and Green, who potentially can play in the same team, which gives us incredible flexibility. But I think he (Green) is good enough," he added.

"It's only a matter of time before he reaches a situation where he's performing for Australia. I think he has a few things to work on around his game, but that's no different to anyone else," he concluded.
