Ahmedabad, March 30 The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday selected Harshad Parmar, son of former BJP MLA Govind Parmar, for the upcoming by-election to the Umreth assembly constituency in Gujarat.
Govind Parmar, who represented the Umreth seat in the Anand district, died on March 6 at the age of 72 following a brief illness, necessitating the by-election.
The Election Commission has scheduled the by-election for April 23.
"Harshad Govindbhai Parmar has been selected as the party's candidate for the by-election to the Umreth assembly constituency," a statement from the BJP's central headquarters said.
This would be his first major election.
Other political parties, including the Congress, have yet to announce their candidates.
In the state assembly elections in 2022, four-term MLA Govind Parmar defeated NCP's Jayant Patel, also known as Boski, by more than 25,000 votes.
In the 182-member Gujarat assembly, the BJP has 161 seats, the Congress 12, the AAP 5, the Samajwadi Party 1, and there are two independent candidates.
The next state assembly elections are scheduled for late 2027.
