Surat, February 19 A man was arrested in Surat, Gujarat, for allegedly using a fake mobile number to harass someone by sending anonymous, abusive messages on WhatsApp, a police official said on Thursday.

Cybercrime police had registered an FIR based on a complaint by a man who said he was receiving abusive messages on WhatsApp from an unknown mobile phone number, the official said.

"According to the complaint, the unidentified person was also sending threatening messages about his daughter. A team was formed, and the accused involved in this crime was identified. Mohammad Naimuddin Refai (37) used a fake mobile number to send threatening messages to the complainant on WhatsApp," he said.

Refai has been booked under sections 504 (intentionally insulting to provoke a breach of peace) and 507 (criminal intimidation through anonymous communication) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, as well as section 66 (c) of the Information Technology Act, he said.
