Chandigarh, February 22 Two personnel of the Punjab Police, who were on duty near the Indo-Pak border, were found dead inside a police outpost with gunshot wounds on Sunday, according to officials.
According to police, the deceased were identified as Gurnam Singh and Ashok Kumar, who were stationed at an outpost in Adhian in the Gurdaspur district of Punjab.
Kumar was a member of the home guard, while Gurnam was an Assistant Sub-Inspector at the Gurdaspur Station House Office, said Banarsi Dass over the phone.
The bodies were found inside the room, which served as the outpost, he said.
Another senior official from the Gurdaspur district said that the circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated.
These outposts, maintained by the Punjab Police in close coordination with the Border Security Force, serve as the second line of defense, he added, noting that the area where the incident occurred is about 2 km from the Indo-Pak border.
SSP Aditya of Gurdaspur said, "In the morning, we received information that two of our personnel had sustained gunshot injuries."
The police have cordoned off the crime scene, with both technical and forensic teams present, the SSP said.
Meanwhile, Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring urged both the state and central governments to investigate the incident.
Warring, in a post on X, said, "It is a matter of grave concern that our two policemen were found shot dead near an outpost in Adhian village, Gurdaspur district. Our sympathies are with the bereaved families, who have lost their loved ones."
Warring further urged the governments to investigate the killings, identify the culprits, and bring them to justice.
"We cannot afford to be partisan or divided on the matter of the safety of our people, the state, and the country," the Congress leader said in the post.
