Gurugram, March 25 The Gurugram Municipal Corporation has suspended a junior engineer for alleged negligence in enforcing safety norms during sewer cleaning, an official said on Wednesday.

The action was taken by Municipal Commissioner Pradeep Dahiya following allegations of violation of prescribed safety standards and laws, he said.

According to an official statement, the incident pertains to sewer cleaning work in Sector 10A, where serious lapses were found.

The spokesperson said the junior engineer, Rahul, failed to ensure compliance with safety protocols and has been suspended with immediate effect.

He said the commissioner had earlier issued directions on January 29 for strict adherence to the Prohibition of Manual Scavenging Act, 2013, and standard operating procedures.

These included mandatory use of protective gear, gas detection, ventilation systems and mechanised cleaning, besides a ban on manual scavenging.

Sources said action may also be taken against the executive engineer, assistant engineer and the contractor concerned.
