
Chandigarh, March 18 A 31-year-old man was killed by two unidentified assailants in a brazen daylight attack in Sector 9 here on Wednesday, police said.
The attackers arrived on a motorcycle, and one of them, wearing a helmet, opened fire at the victim, Charanpreet Singh, who had gone to a gym in the upscale market of Chandigarh.
In a video, the unidentified assailant, wearing a red T-shirt, could be seen firing at Singh as he stepped out of his black SUV. The assailants approached the car from the driver's side and fired at close range.
Singh, a resident of the Mullanpur area in Mohali district, sustained multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to a hospital where doctors declared him dead, police said.
The assailants fled the scene on the motorcycle bearing a Chandigarh registration number. A photograph of the assailants, wearing helmets, later surfaced on social media.
Police cordoned off the area, and a forensic team collected samples from the scene, they said.
An investigation into the matter is underway, and CCTV camera footage of the area is being scanned to trace the assailants, a police officer said, adding that a high alert has been sounded following the incident.
Later, an unverified post appeared on social media in which gangster Lucky Patial took responsibility for the murder, accusing Singh of passing information about the gang to rivals.
This was the second firing incident reported in Chandigarh within 24 hours. On Tuesday, unidentified assailants opened fire at a student leader near the Department of Botany at Panjab University. However, the student leader escaped unhurt.
