Yamunanagar, April 9 Eleven people, including seven children, suffered burn injuries after a gas cylinder leak triggered an explosion and a fire at a residential area for migrant workers here on Thursday, police said.

According to officials, most victims sustained burns ranging from 50-60 per cent, with the young children crying and writhing in pain.

Jagadhari Station House Officer Tarsem Kumar told

"There was a leakage from an LPG cylinder kept nearby, which burst into flames upon coming into contact with the open fire, causing an explosion that severely damaged the walls of the quarter," he said.

Among the injured were a two-month-old infant and a pregnant woman. Two 43-year-old men, and seven children between the ages of five and ten were also injured.

The injured were admitted to the civil hospital in Jagadhari, Kumar said, adding that those who suffered serious burn injuries were later referred to a hospital in Chandigarh.

An investigation is underway to determine how the fire started, he said.

Raj Kumar, a resident of the area, said he was returning home from work in the morning when he heard an explosion.

Residents said there are multiple quarters in the area for migrant workers who work in nearby factories.
