Chandigarh, February 27 Over 15,000 teaching positions are vacant in government schools in Haryana, with nearly 5,000 of those positions in the Nuh-Mewat district, the state government told the assembly on Friday.

In a written reply presented in the assembly in response to a question from Congress MLA Aditya Surjewala, Haryana Education Minister Mahipal Dhanda stated that the state government is committed to filling the vacant teaching positions in a timely manner.

"...however, the direct recruitment and promotion process takes time in certain cases due to legal challenges. Therefore, the recruitment process is not completed within a fixed timeframe," the minister said.

The total number of vacant teaching positions in government schools across the state as of January 2026 is 15,451, he stated.

Specifically, the figure for Nuh-Mewat alone is 4,954. There are also vacancies in Ambala (925), Gurugram (1,130), Palwal (1,595), and Yamunanagar (1,721).

In response to another question from the Congress MLA, Dhanda stated that there are no government schools in Haryana without toilet facilities or drinking water as of January 2026.
