Guwahati, March 29 Union Minister Amit Shah's planned election rally in the Dhekiajuli assembly constituency in Sonitpur district of Assam was delayed on Sunday due to heavy rain, a BJP leader said.
Shah's programme was scheduled to begin around 11 am, but his helicopter could not take off from here due to the bad weather, he said.
The union minister later travelled by road to Dhekiajuli, which is about 133 kms from here, the BJP leader said.
"It will take at least three hours to reach the venue," he said.
Shah was scheduled to address two election rallies in Dhekiajuli for ministers Ashok Singhal and Chandramohan Patowary, and later in Tihu.
He had arrived here on Saturday evening and led a roadshow for BJP and alliance partner candidates for all five constituencies, including that of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's Jalukbari seat, in the Gauhati Parliamentary constituency.
Besides Sarma, party candidates Vijay Gupta (Guwahati Central), Diplu Ranjan Sarma (New Guwahati), Pradyut Bordoloi (Dispur) and AGP's Tapan Das (Dimoria) were present in the roadshow.
Elections to the 126 assembly constituencies in Assam will be held on April 9, with counting scheduled on May 4.
