High Court Considers Complaint of Dual Citizenship Against Rahul Gandhi

High Court Considers Complaint of Dual Citizenship Against Rahul Gandhi.webp

Lucknow, March 9 The Allahabad High Court on Monday directed the central government to produce records in connection with a complaint against Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, alleging dual citizenship.

The Lucknow bench of Justice Rajeev Singh posted the matter for hearing on March 19 after receiving the direction.

The order came while hearing a petition filed by S Vignesh Shishir, a BJP worker from Karnataka, challenging an order of a special court for MPs and MLAs in Lucknow, dated January 28, 2026, which rejected his plea seeking to register an FIR against Gandhi.

The special court had held that it did not have the authority to decide on matters related to citizenship.

In his petition before the high court, Shishir has sought directions for registering an FIR against Gandhi and a detailed investigation into the matter.

He has alleged that Gandhi holds dual citizenship, citing provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Official Secrets Act, the Foreigners Act, and the Passport Act.

During the hearing on Monday, the bench questioned the counsel for the central government, Raj Kumar Singh, about the action taken by the Centre on a complaint related to Gandhi's alleged British citizenship.

Subsequently, the court directed that all records related to the alleged controversy should be produced from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.

The initial complaint was filed before the special court in Rae Bareli.

However, on a petition filed by the complainant, the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court transferred the criminal complaint case from Rae Bareli to Lucknow on December 17, 2025.

The special court in Lucknow later rejected the plea on January 28, after which the petitioner approached the high court.
