High Court Protects Farmers' Rights in Paddy Cultivation Dispute

High Court Protects Farmers' Rights in Paddy Cultivation Dispute.webp

Nainital, March 18 The Uttarakhand High Court has provided a significant relief to farmers in Udham Singh Nagar district by staying an administrative order related to summer paddy cultivation.

Justice Pankaj Purohit heard a petition filed by farmers from the Gadarpur tehsil.

The petition challenges the Udham Singh Nagar district administration's order dated February 4, in which the district magistrate had directed all sub-district magistrates to destroy unauthorized summer paddy nurseries (seedlings grown from sown seeds) and allow paddy cultivation only in waterlogged areas.

The petitioners informed the court that their agricultural land is located in various areas, many of which do not fall under the category of waterlogged land. They argued that there is no legal provision for such an order and that it violates the rights of farmers.

After hearing the matter, the court said that until the next hearing date, farmers will be allowed to prepare summer paddy nurseries and continue cultivation.

The next hearing date for the case has been fixed for March 23.
