High Court Rejects Claim on IPL Branding.webp

Kochi, March 18 The Kerala High Court has dismissed a public interest litigation (PIL) that claimed the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) professional T20 cricket league could not use the name "Indian Premier League."

The petitioner, Ashique Karoth, who claimed to be a social worker, argued that the BCCI's use of the name "Indian Premier League" was "illegal."

A bench comprising Chief Justice Soumen Sen and Justice Syam Kumar V M observed that the petitioner only recently realized that the IPL was not an official cricket tournament of the country, despite its existence for several years.

"We find no merit in the substance of this argument, and therefore, we do not feel it would be appropriate to keep this writ petition as a public interest litigation (PIL)," the bench said.
