Guwahati, March 20 The wife and son of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who accompanied him while filing his nomination papers from the Jalukbari seat on Friday, said they were "very happy" to see a large number of people supporting him.

His wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, described the occasion as a "very happy moment for us".

"The people of Jalukbari consider Himanta as the head of the family, and this huge gathering shows their support and blessings for him," she said.

She also stated that he considers the people of his constituency as members of his extended family.

"He belongs to the public and for the last 25 years he has been serving them, which he will continue to do in the future," she added.

"I have been helping in his campaign for the last several elections and will do the same this time," Bhuyan Sarma said.

Regarding her son's presence during the nomination filing, she said he had come "to support his father" and had also attended the previous nomination event.

Bhuyan Sarma is the managing director of media company Pride East Entertainment.

The CM's son, Nandil Biswa Sarma, said, "Everything has been great so far. We are grateful to God".

"I am feeling very happy for him, and there is nothing more to say on this," he added.

Nandil, a law student at National Law University, Bengaluru, said he would attend his father's last rally in the Jalukbari constituency, likely on April 6 or 7.

The CM had earlier said his wife would visit religious places in the constituency as part of the campaign, while his son would return to his studies.

His daughter, who wished to attend the nomination filing, could not do so due to her examinations.

Sarma filed his nomination papers at the Kamrup (Metropolitan) District Commissioner's office here, seeking re-election from the Jalukbari constituency for the sixth term in a row.

The last date for filing of nomination papers is March 23, scrutiny of papers will be held the next day, and the last date of withdrawal is March 26.

Elections to the 126-member assembly will be held on April 9, and the votes will be counted on May 4.
