
Aizawl, March 24, 2026: The Assam Rifles, one of the oldest and most prestigious paramilitary forces in India, celebrated its 191st Raising Day on March 24, 2026, with great pride and solemnity at its headquarters in Shillong. This significant milestone marks nearly two centuries of dedicated service, bravery, and unwavering commitment to protecting the nation's borders.
On this occasion, Lieutenant General Vikas Lakhera, AVSM, SM, Director General of the Assam Rifles, along with all ranks of the Force, paid homage at the War Memorial in Shillong to the brave soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Addressing the personnel, the Director General commended all ranks for their outstanding contributions in counter-insurgency operations in the North East and Jammu & Kashmir.
The Force has continued to demonstrate exceptional operational excellence during 2025–26. In recognition of their exemplary performance, three battalions of the Assam Rifles were awarded the Chief of the Army Staff Unit Citation, while four battalions received the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief Unit Citation. Notably, the 8th Assam Rifles was conferred the prestigious title of ‘Bravest of the Brave’ on Army Day 2026.
Further adding to its achievements, personnel of the Assam Rifles were honored with several gallantry and service awards on Republic Day 2026, including one Kirti Chakra, four Shaurya Chakras, one Vishisht Seva Medal, and twelve Sena Medals.
The Assam Rifles remains committed to modernization through the induction of state-of-the-art weapons, surveillance systems, and protective equipment. With a continued focus on enhancing operational capability, the Force stands as a pillar of security and stability in the North East region.
As the region progresses towards greater development and prosperity, the Assam Rifles continues to foster a sense of trust and security among the local population. Upholding its motto as the ‘Sentinels of the North East,’ the Force remains prepared to meet emerging challenges with resilience and dedication.
