Hrithik Roshan on 'Ramayana' VFX Criticism – A Call for Appreciation

New Delhi, April 5 Bollywood star Hrithik Roshan shared his thoughts on the ongoing debate over VFX in Ranbir Kapoor-starrer "Ramayana" and praised filmmakers who strive to deliver a new experience to the audience.

Roshan posted a note on his Instagram handle on Saturday, saying that several filmmakers, including his father Rakesh Roshan, risk their money and efforts to provide the audience with an experience they have never had before.

The actor, who is set to direct "Krrish 4", named films such as "Kalki", "Baahubali" and "Ramayana", and said that the makers of these movies are "heroes who have the guts and vision" according to him.

"Today, some special individuals, such as the makers of films like 'Kalki', 'Baahubali', and 'Ramayana' (as well as my father for 'Koi Mil Gaya' and 'Krrish', of course), are my heroes. They have the courage and vision to do what has never been done – all for the love of cinema, so that we, the audience, can experience something new," he wrote in the lengthy caption.

"From my point of view, they risked all that money and years of effort, just so another 11-year-old could feel what I felt. To me, that's noble. The intention itself deserves applause! I am proud of my fellow Indians. I would give anything to be a part of such dreams, even as an assistant...But this post is not about me; it's about us, the audience. The thing is, it takes thousands of our artistes working around the clock for multiple years to bring VFX-heavy films to life, so the least we can do is appreciate them," he added.

Roshan continued his take on the same in the comment section under his post and noted how there are different VFX styles.

"In my little understanding, from what I have learned, is that there are different VFX styles adopted by makers to bring their vision to life. It's like in comics or animation – some prefer the anime style, but it's not as realistic as 'Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse'. You can like one style over the other, but neither is wrong... Bad VFX is when a movie promises something like 'photorealism' but fails to achieve it fully. Even a small lapse in physics/gravity can then destroy the entire illusion," he said.

"You can't criticize the maker just because he has chosen one style while you prefer another. That's not fair. So, sometimes when you say 'bad VFX,' maybe it's just a style you didn't expect? So, next time, don't just ask, 'Is it real?' First, ask, 'Is it right for the story?' 'Is it making me feel what the maker intended?' Then debate it, but debate it with awareness."

His comments come after the teaser release of Ranbir Kapoor's film "Ramayana", which has received mixed reactions, with some users criticizing it for appearing like a video game, as well as concerns over casting choices and character portrayals.

The film is directed by Nitesh Tiwari and features Kapoor in the role of Ram, and Sai Pallavi as Sita.

The film is set to be released in two installments, with the first scheduled for a theatrical release in Diwali 2026 (Part 1), with Part 2 following in Diwali 2027.

According to reports, it is the most expensive film ever made in India, with a budget of over Rs 4,000 crore.
