March 09, New Delhi: The Indian women's national field hockey team kicked off their FIH Hockey World Cup Qualifiers campaign with a commanding 4-0 victory over the Uruguayan women's national field hockey team in Hyderabad.
The hosts started strongly, dominating possession and pressing for an early goal. However, their inability to make the final pass, combined with Uruguay's strong defense, resulted in a goalless first quarter. They broke the deadlock in the second quarter when Sunelita Toppo scored the first goal. Subsequently, Ishika, Lalremsiami, and Rutuja Dadaso Pisal also found the back of the net, ensuring a convincing win for the home team.
With these three points, India moved to the top of Pool B, ahead of the Scottish women's national field hockey team, who defeated the Welsh women's national field hockey team 1-0.
