Hyderabad, February 23 To encourage the use of helmets among two-wheeler riders, the Malkajgiri Police Commissionerate launched a "Helmet Bank" initiative at the field level here on Monday.

As part of the initiative, riders found traveling without a helmet are given the option to borrow a helmet free of charge on the spot by providing their basic details. They are required to return the helmet within 24 hours after purchasing a new one, said Deputy Commissioner of Police, Traffic-I (Malkajgiri), K Rahul Reddy.

The objective is to ensure immediate compliance, protect the rider's life, and encourage responsible riding behavior, rather than solely focusing on punitive measures, Reddy explained.

"The initiative is intended to create a positive mindset among motorcyclists to use helmets as a safety measure, not out of fear of getting a traffic fine. We have started the Helmet Bank initiative to address the issue in a positive way," the DCP told reporters.

The initiative has been implemented at key traffic junctions across the Malkajgiri Zone, and aims to prevent head injuries, save lives, build public trust through positive policing, and create lasting behavioral change, an official release said.

This initiative also reinforces the ongoing "Arrive Alive" road safety campaign of the Telangana Police, which emphasizes that wearing a helmet is essential for every trip, regardless of distance, it further said.

The Malkajgiri Traffic Police appealed to all two-wheeler riders to regularly wear helmets and support the mission of safer roads.
