India Concerned as Oil Tanker Incident Sparks Fears of Escalation.webp

New Delhi, March 1 A Palau-flagged oil tanker carrying 15 Indian crew members came under attack from the Iranian military off the Musandam peninsula in Oman, and four people were injured, Omani authorities said on Sunday.

Iran has carried out a series of attacks, primarily targeting Israeli and American military bases in several Gulf countries, following the US and Israel's attack on Iran on Saturday.

Iran retaliated after Tehran announced early Sunday that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in the Israel-US attack.

The Omani Maritime Security Center said the Skylight oil tanker was attacked approximately five nautical miles north of the Khasab port in the Musandam governorate.

According to the Omani news agency, all 20 crew members, including 15 Indians and five Iranians, have been safely evacuated.

The statement also said that four crew members sustained injuries and have been provided with medical care.

Sources familiar with the incident indicated that New Delhi is in contact with the relevant authorities.

Iran said on Sunday that it would avenge Khamenei's death, raising fears of a wider conflict in the Middle East.

The US-Israel joint strikes on Iran came after weeks of negotiations between Washington and Tehran on the Iranian nuclear program did not yield any tangible results.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Saturday that India is deeply concerned about the recent developments in Iran and the Gulf region.

"We urge all sides to exercise restraint, avoid escalation, and prioritize the safety of civilians," it said.

"Dialogue and diplomacy should be pursued to de-escalate tensions and address underlying issues. The sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states must be respected," it added.
