India-Myanmar Ties Highlighted During State Minister's Visit.webp

Yangon, April 8 – State Minister for External Affairs, Kirti Vardhan Singh, joined the "Deck Reception" aboard the Indian Navy survey ship INS Sandhayak in Yangon on Wednesday, just a few hours after arriving in Myanmar to attend the inaugural ceremony of the country's new President, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, which was scheduled to take place in the capital, Naypyidaw, on April 10.

"The interaction with senior officials highlighted the deep connection between India and Myanmar. The visit by INS Sandhayak aligns with the vision of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, known as MAHASAGAR," Singh posted on X.

Earlier, upon his arrival in Yangon, Singh was received by the Indian Ambassador to Myanmar, Abhay Thakur, and U Zaw Phyo Win, Director-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) in Myanmar.

During the visit, the State Minister will meet with officials from the Myanmar government, participate in bilateral engagements related to ongoing trade, economic, and development assistance, and interact with the Indian diaspora and friends of India.

"Upon his arrival in Yangon today, Kirti Vardhan Singh was received by Ambassador Abhay Thakur and DG MOFA U Zaw Phyo Win. During his visit, he will participate in the inauguration ceremony of the President of Myanmar, meet with dignitaries from the Myanmar government, and interact with the Indian diaspora and friends of India," the Indian Embassy in Yangon posted on X.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Singh is on a four-day visit to Myanmar from April 8-11 at the invitation of the Myanmar government.

Min Aung Hlaing was elected as the country's President on April 3, after securing more votes among the three nominees.

Hlaing's two Vice Presidents are former military-appointed Prime Minister Nyo Saw, a long-time loyalist, and Nan Ni Ni Aye, the Karen State chair of the military-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), The Irrawaddy reported.

In the days leading up to his election, Min Aung Hlaing stepped down as Commander-in-Chief and appointed General Ye Win Oo to the post.

Min Aung Hlaing has ruled Myanmar since 2021. Elections were held in the country in December 2025 and January 2026 in which the USDP secured a win in the elections.

Analysts believe that the political situation in Myanmar, which has remained in a state of deadlock for five years, is poised to foster both domestic and regional stability in the coming years.
