India Responds to Sri Lanka's Fuel Supply Request.webp

Colombo, March 12 Sri Lanka said on Thursday that India has responded positively to its request for assistance in securing fuel supplies in the possible scenario of continued tensions in West Asia.

Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath made the request when he met External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar during his visit to India on March 6, a Foreign Ministry release said.

"The Indian government has responded positively to this request and has further informed that the necessary steps are being taken," it said.

This would enable Sri Lanka to maintain its continued fuel supplies.

Sri Lanka has raised fuel prices to curb hoarding.

Long queues were seen at fuel pumps when the conflict broke out on February 28. The government has appealed to reduce non-essential travel to minimize fuel usage.

So far, the government has resisted calls to impose fuel rationing.

The Indian Oil Company operates fuel retail stations on the island.
