
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla met the Sri Lankan parliamentary delegation in Parliament today. The delegation was led by the Chairman of the Oversight Committee on Infrastructure and Strategic Issues, S.M. Marikkar. In a social media post, the Lok Sabha Speaker stated that the interaction reflected the deep-rooted civilizational ties, shared democratic values, and strong partnership between India and Sri Lanka.
The discussions focused on strengthening parliamentary cooperation as a vital pillar of bilateral relations, with emphasis on structured exchanges between legislatures to reinforce democratic institutions and share best practices. The discussions also highlighted the significant role of parliamentary committees in ensuring accountability and effective governance.
Mr. Birla reiterated India's commitment to its "neighbourhood first" policy and shared insights on the country's progress in infrastructure and connectivity. He also emphasized the growing role of innovation and technology in enhancing parliamentary functioning.
The Lok Sabha Speaker noted the mutual interest in expanding cooperation through capacity building and institutional engagement. He expressed confidence that such engagements would further deepen parliamentary ties and strengthen India-Sri Lanka relations.
