According to former wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik, a flat, red soil pitch at the Wankhede Stadium could level the playing field between India and England, rather than giving either side an advantage in the 2026 Men's T20 World Cup semi-final.

He added that favorable weather conditions and minimal dew should create a good contest between the two teams aiming to reach the final, where they will face New Zealand in Ahmedabad on Sunday.

India has a strong record against England in the shortest format, having won 17 of the 29 T20Is played between the two sides. They also have a narrow advantage in the T20 World Cups, with three wins from five meetings. The most recent clash saw India defeat England by 150 runs at the Wankhede Stadium in February 2025.

"Yes, a flat pitch evens out the advantage. I was looking at the weather and the expected temperature range, which I calculated to be between 32 and 26 degrees, a range that isn't bad and essentially means there won't be too much dew," Karthik explained.

He also believes that the conditions at the Wankhede Stadium suit both teams. Abhishek Sharma, the current top-ranked T20I batter, is known for his ability to consistently hit boundaries, while Varun Chakaravarthy is a skilled wrist spinner who can exploit the bounce on the red soil pitch.

"I think both players will enjoy playing at the Wankhede Stadium. Abhishek will be able to take advantage of the bounce to hit boundaries, while Varun will be able to use his skill to exploit the conditions," Karthik added.

One area of concern for India is their catching efficiency, which stands at 72 percent, the lowest among the remaining teams. This issue had surfaced even before the World Cup began, and errors in catching in the semi-final could prove costly.

Karthik acknowledged the problem but urged a measured, root-cause approach to solve it. "For starters, we need to make sure that the right fielders are in the right places. It's also worth noting that India's fielding efficiency has been poor. So, (T) Dilip, the fielding coach, will be working hard to ensure that the fielders are confident," he said.

"However, it's very difficult to push any team beyond a certain point in fielding, especially when a match is around the corner, because it's physically exhausting. So, you need to understand the player before you see where they have dropped a catch and what you need to do."

"Sometimes, it could simply be that the player wasn't concentrating enough. It's not about their skill set. So, addressing the root cause of the issue is the right way to go about it," he concluded.
