Kolkata, April 1 The Indian Statistical Institute has appointed renowned mathematician Amartya Kumar Dutta as its new full-term director, effective Wednesday, according to an official notification.

The last full-time director of the premier institute was Sanghamitra Bandyopadhyay, whose term expired in September last year, after which acting directors had been leading the ISI.

According to the notification, "Professor Amartya Kumar Dutta is appointed as the Director of the Indian Statistical Institute for a period of five years or until he attains the age of retirement, whichever is earlier, effective from April 1, 2026."

Dutta, currently a professor of mathematics at the institute, was selected by a three-member search committee constituted by the ISI Council, its apex administrative body.

He replaced outgoing acting director Ayanendranath Basu, whose term ended on March 30.
