The first phase of the 2027 Indian Census, the world's largest population enumeration, will begin today. An Akashvani Jammu correspondent reports that in Jammu and Kashmir, the first phase will commence on June 1. According to details shared by Registrar General and Census Commissioner Mritunjay Kumar Narayan in New Delhi, the Union Territory will conduct the House Listing and Housing Census from June 1 to June 30, 2026, preceded by a self-enumeration window from May 17 to May 31. For areas affected by heavy snowfall, the reference date has been set as October 1, 2026, due to climatic conditions. The exercise will be conducted in two phases – House Listing and Population Enumeration – with March 1, 2027, as the reference date.
