
New Delhi, April 1 Coal India Ltd announced on Wednesday that its production fell by 1.7 per cent to 768.1 million tonnes in the recently concluded fiscal year 2026.
The company, which accounts for over 80 per cent of domestic coal output, produced 781.1 million tonnes (MT) in fiscal year 2025.
According to provisional data from Coal India Ltd (CIL), output in March fell to 84.5 MT from 85.8 MT in the previous year.
The company's coal off-take, the quantity of coal dispatched from mines to consumers, also declined by 2.4 per cent to 744.8 MT from 763 MT in fiscal year 2025.
Coal India Ltd is the main fuel supplier to the country's power sector, providing the bulk of coal required by thermal power plants.
Its role is central to energy security, especially as coal still accounts for roughly 70 per cent of India's power generation, even amid rapid growth in renewables.
