March 21, New Delhi — The Indian Navy is set to commission its newest stealth frigate, Taragiri (F41), on April 3, 2026, in Visakhapatnam. The ceremony will be presided over by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and marks a significant step in India’s efforts to strengthen maritime self-reliance.

Taragiri is the fourth frigate under Project 17A and displaces 6,670 tonnes. Built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, Mumbai, the warship reflects India’s growing indigenous shipbuilding capabilities and the ‘Make in India’ initiative.

The frigate features an advanced design with a sleeker structure and a significantly reduced radar cross-section, enabling stealth operations. With more than 75 percent indigenous content, the vessel has been developed with support from over 200 Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, contributing to the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative and generating large-scale employment.

Taragiri is powered by a Combined Diesel or Gas propulsion system, enabling high-speed and long-endurance operations across diverse maritime missions. Its weapon systems include supersonic surface-to-surface missiles, medium-range surface-to-air missiles, and specialized anti-submarine warfare capabilities. These are integrated through an advanced combat management system for quick and precise threat response.

Apart from combat roles, the frigate is also equipped for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations, making it suitable for a wide range of missions.

The commissioning of Taragiri highlights the Indian Navy’s continued expansion as a combat-ready and self-reliant force, strengthening India’s maritime security and naval capabilities.
