Lucknow, April 7 Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said the Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor at Kalpakkam in Tamil Nadu stands as a symbol of India's technological prowess and national ambition.
He stated that this achievement reinforces India's position as a global energy leader.
In a post on X, Adityanath said, "India enters a new era of nuclear strength. The Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor at Kalpakkam stands as a symbol of our technological excellence and national ambition. By harnessing our vast thorium reserves, Bharat is taking a decisive step towards energy supremacy and long-term self-reliance."
"Guided by the bold and visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, this achievement reinforces India's rise as a global energy leader. Congratulations to our dedicated scientists and engineers on this remarkable milestone," Adityanath wrote.
The 500 MWe Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor at Kalpakkam, which is accelerating India's nuclear energy programme, achieved its first criticality on Monday.
First criticality – or the start of a controlled fission chain reaction – in a fast breeder reactor is the moment when the nuclear chain reaction becomes self-sustaining.
The technology development and design of the reactor were done indigenously by the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, a research and development centre of the Department of Atomic Energy, and it was built and commissioned by Bharatiya Nabhikiya Vidyut Nigam Ltd, a public sector undertaking under the Department of Atomic Energy.
