Bengaluru, April 1 A 65-year-old Dutch national of Indian origin has been arrested for allegedly sending a suspicious package to the administrative office of the Kempegowda International Airport here, police said on Wednesday.

The man, identified as Subhash Jai Ajeez, reportedly sent the package in January, which contained a toothpaste cover, decaying flower garlands, rotten tomatoes, pieces of iron, and obscene photographs, according to police.

Authorities conducted a preliminary investigation and filed a formal complaint on March 4, police said.

Following examination of CCTV footage and gathering information from local sources, police traced Ajeez near a temple in Madiwala, where he was found sleeping, a senior police officer said.

During questioning, Ajeez told police that he did not have any malicious intent and claimed the package was part of a ritual meant to prevent "untoward incidents" at the airport.

He also told police that he had sent similar packages to other airports, he said.

Police said Ajeez is an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholder and a retired professional who receives a monthly pension of about Euro 2,000.

"He seemed to be mentally disturbed. He claimed he did not have any ill intention of creating any kind of trouble but only intended to ensure that no untoward incidents occur at Bengaluru airport," the officer said.

He has been remanded to judicial custody, and further action will depend on his medical examination reports, police said, adding that further investigation is underway.
