Thane, April 1 A stray dog has allegedly been beaten to death at a housing society in Thane district, Maharashtra, prompting police to register a case against unidentified individuals, officials said on Wednesday.
The incident occurred in Bhoirwadi, Kalyan, on Sunday night. Some videos circulating on social media showed people walking with sticks in the residential area.
The dog was later found dead in the housing society's parking lot, with signs of a struggle, according to an official from the Khadakpada police station.
A local animal feeder filed a complaint following the incident. Representatives of the Plants and Animals Welfare Society (PAWS) also pursued the matter with the police.
Based on the complaint, the police registered a case against unidentified individuals on Monday under sections of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, the official said.
The police were examining CCTV footage of the area to identify the perpetrators, he added.
This comes just days after a separate case was filed against a resident of the same society. On March 27, a 43-year-old woman dog lover alleged that the resident threatened to poison stray dogs following a dog-bite incident involving a minor. A case of criminal intimidation under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) was registered against him.
