IPL 2026: RCB's Challenge Amidst Remembrance.webp

The 2026 IPL, starting this Saturday, promises intriguing moments over the next two months.

The defending champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, who host Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in the tournament opener, would have liked to enter the league's 19th edition with greater momentum.

However, the atmosphere surrounding the match is somber, as the memory of the June 4 stampede outside the stadium during the team's title celebration continues to cast a shadow.

The Karnataka State Cricket Association and RCB management have also taken steps to honor the memory of those who lost their lives.

The KSCA has allocated 11 permanent empty seats in the stadium, which had to undergo several uncertain months before securing the necessary permissions from state government authorities to host IPL matches. RCB players will wear jerseys with "11" printed on the back during the practice session on the first match day.

While these measures are commendable, cricket often transcends such emotions and symbolic gestures.

It's clear that both RCB and Sunrisers are facing challenges in terms of bowling resources after losing key players.

RCB will be missing Josh Hazlewood and Yash Dayal, who played crucial roles in their 2025 title-winning campaign. Hazlewood is completing his rehabilitation in Australia and may join the squad later. Dayal will sit out the entire season due to sexual abuse allegations.

They will rely heavily on veteran pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar, spinner Krunal Pandya, Suyash Sharma, and left-arm pacer Mangesh Yadav.

SRH will also be missing captain Pat Cummins for at least the initial phase. Ishan Kishan has been named the stand-in captain.

However, their backup options don't inspire much confidence. Brydon Carse, Jaydev Unadkat, Harshal Patel, and Harsh Dubey could face significant challenges on flat pitches.

Both teams will be hoping to compensate for their bowling weaknesses with strong batting performances.

RCB boasts of Virat Kohli, Tim David, Phil Salt, Jacob Bethell, captain Rajat Patidar, and Romario Shepherd. SRH can counter them with Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, Kishan, and Heinrich Klaasen.

Legacy sides aiming for redemption

==================

Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings, and Kolkata Knight Riders have a combined 13 IPL titles. However, they struggled last season.

MI managed to reach the playoffs as the fourth-placed team, but it was clear that they were running out of resources, and they are determined to achieve a campaign that reflects their five-time winners status this time.

KKR and CSK ended up at eighth and 10th respectively. They have made some changes to their squads. CSK has brought in Sanju Samson from RR and added Matt Henry and Noor Ahmad.

They will certainly look for one last impactful performance from Mahendra Singh Dhoni, whose future in the IPL remains uncertain.

KKR has strengthened its batting lineup with Tim Seifert, Finn Allen, Rachin Ravindra, and Cameron Green, who is the highest-paid overseas player in IPL history.

Captain Ajinkya Rahane will be the key player, and his deputy Rinku Singh will need to step up as a finisher, similar to what Andre Russell did for them from 2014 until his retirement last year.

In bowling, they have two strong options in Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine, but their pace department remains a concern.

Rajasthan Royals and Gujarat Titans will be aiming to add another trophy to their collection, while Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings, and Lucknow Supergiants will be looking for their maiden title.

Kohli and Rohit Sharma: A test of mettle

=======

It's always exciting to see old champions trying to stay relevant against younger teams.

Kohli and Rohit Sharma have achieved a lot in their careers, but they still have something to prove.

Kohli won the IPL title with RCB last year, and he wants to continue his success in this edition.

In that context, Kohli’s challenge will be to maintain his intensity level. He is well-rested after the home ODI series against New Zealand in January.

Rohit, whose last competitive outing was also against the Kiwis, offers a slightly different perspective. As a batter, he has never been a consistent performer in the IPL.

The 38-year-old has never scored over 538 runs in a single edition, and he wants to break that record this season, also helping Mumbai win their sixth IPL title.

He looks fit, having shed a few kilos, prompting England head coach Brendon McCullum to jokingly ask him - “where is the rest of you” - during the recent T20 World Cup.

Future stars

========

As always, a group of uncapped cricketers are hoping to impress the selectors.

Domestic star Auqib Nabi of Delhi Capitals, Kartik Sharma of Rajasthan Royals, and Prashant Veer of Chennai Super Kings are among them.

Can they challenge the established order? Or will the familiar names continue to dominate? The next 65 days will provide the answer.
