IPL Dominance: Players Seek Better Opportunities.webp

Mumbai, March 27. Although the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the Pakistan Super League (PSL) are organized in neighboring countries and within the same timeframe, they are vastly different in terms of their potential, revenues, popularity, and influence.

However, in the past few days, both leagues have seen players switching from PSL teams to IPL franchises, preferring the larger platform that allows late replacements due to various reasons, including injuries.

Players like Blessing Muzarabani of Zimbabwe, Dasun Shanaka of Sri Lanka, Spencer Johnson of Australia, and Gudakesh Motie of the West Indies have all rescinded their PSL contracts and joined the IPL, much to the annoyance of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and its chairman, Mohsin Naqvi.

Muzarabani, who played for Islamabad United in the PSL, had been signed for 11 million PKR as a replacement for West Indies star Shamar Joseph. However, just before the start of the PSL on March 26, Muzarabani joined Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), the three-time IPL champions, as a replacement for Mustafizur Rahman, who was released by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Soon after, Rajasthan Royals announced that they had signed Sri Lankan all-rounder and T20I captain Dasun Shanaka as a replacement for Sam Curran for the 2026 IPL season after an injury ruled the English all-rounder out of the tournament.

Shanaka was unsold at last year's IPL auction in Abu Dhabi and was later picked up by Lahore Qalandars in the upcoming PSL season for PKR 75 lakh. With this signing, Shanaka became the second player, after Zimbabwe's Blessing Muzarabani, to leave PSL and join IPL this year.

A few days later, Chennai Super Kings (CSK), the five-time champions, signed Australian pacer Spenser Johnson as a replacement for Nathan Ellis, who has been ruled out of the tournament due to a hamstring injury.

Johnson had signed for Quetta Gladiators for the 2026 PSL season, but pulled out just before the tournament, citing personal reasons for leaving PSL.

South Africa's seam-bowling all-rounder Corbin Bosch was the first player to switch from PSL to IPL, signing with Mumbai Indians, prompting the PSL to impose a one-year ban on him.

With three players withdrawing from PSL 2026 and joining the IPL, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi was furious and has threatened legal action against the players. However, he seems to be overlooking one crucial fact: nobody can stop anyone from pursuing better opportunities, and the IPL offers players a much more attractive environment.

It's undeniable that cricketers worldwide want to play franchise cricket, and the IPL is the most prestigious league, making everyone want to be a part of it. IPL franchises also want the best players in the world, and are willing to spend huge sums to recruit top talent that they can use in other leagues if they can't use them in the IPL. The PSL simply cannot compete on any parameter.

With the IPL offering substantial sums, highly competitive cricket, instant recognition, and a better lifestyle, players are drawn to it, leading them to switch sides when the opportunity arises.

Furthermore, the PSL is the only league that clashes with the IPL because it is deliberately held in the same timeframe, allowing players to move from the weaker league to the stronger one. The PCB knows that the IPL is a superior product, but still wants to compete with it for recognition and to satisfy domestic sensibilities.

Besides domestic sensibilities, the reason the PCB feels threatened by losing out to the IPL is that, for the first time, the PSL has attracted world-class talent in the form of Australians Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne. David Warner will also be participating for the second consecutive season, and with players like Dasun Shanaka and Spencer Johnson, the PSL has for the first time attracted top-level talent. But losing three top-level players has definitely left the PCB bosses red-faced and fuming.

However, with the PCB looking hell-bent on pursuing legal action against the players instead of improving and producing a better product, they may face another setback and lose more face.
