April 03, New Delhi – Gennaro Gattuso has resigned as the head coach of the Italian national team after the country failed to qualify for a third consecutive World Cup.
The Italian national football team was eliminated following a penalty shootout defeat to the Bosnia and Herzegovina national football team in the play-off final, effectively ending Gattuso's tenure after less than a year.
The fallout also saw Gabriele Gravina, the president of the Italian Football Federation, and team manager Gianluigi Buffon, step down.
Despite a relatively strong record, Gattuso faced heavy criticism after Italy's unexpected elimination, further prolonging the period of decline for the four-time World Cup champions.
