Iyer's Fifty Leads PBKS to IPL Victory.webp

Chennai, April 3 Shreyas Iyer's half-century, marked by elegance and aggression, was the highlight of Punjab Kings' five-wicket victory over Chennai Super Kings in their IPL match on Friday.

Iyer (50, 29 balls) and his 59-run partnership with Nehal Wadhera for the fourth wicket helped Punjab reach 210 for five while chasing a challenging 209 target on a dew-free Chepauk night, also handing the hosts their second consecutive defeat.

This was Punjab's second consecutive win, but other players also shone for PBKS.

To achieve a run rate of around 11, Punjab needed consistent and calm batting, which the top order delivered effectively. Players like Priyansh Arya (39, 11 balls), Prabhsimran Singh (43, 34b), and Cooper Connolly (36, 22b) all made significant contributions.

Arya was particularly effective against CSK's attack, dismissing Khaleel Ahmed for 4 and 6, and Matt Henry for 4, 6, and 4 in his first over, which conceded 20 runs.

Arya and Prabhsimran scored 61 runs in just 4.2 overs, setting the tone for the match.

While Shreyas Iyer started slowly, scoring 8 off 9 balls, Connolly did most of the early work. However, once Connolly was dismissed, Shreyas took over the chase.

As expected, Shreyas dominated the spinners, with his highlight being an inside-out six off Rahul Chahar.

Shreyas reached his fifty in 26 balls with a boundary off Kamboj, but was soon dismissed after attempting a wide delivery.

Wadhera was dismissed in the first ball of the next over by Henry, leaving Punjab at 186 for five from their previous 186 for three.

However, this was a minor setback.

Earlier, Ayush Mhatre showcased his talent with a 43-ball 73, helping Super Kings reach a competitive 209 for five.

Mhatre and captain Ruturaj Gaikwad (28) added 96 runs for the second wicket after Sanju Samson was dismissed early.

Samson inexplicably moved to the leg-side and attempted to hit Xavier Bartlett's out-swinger over covers, but only managed a weak edge to Prabhsimran behind the wicket.

However, his dismissal was a minor blip, as Mhatre dominated Punjab's bowling with power and precision.

Pacer Bartlett was the first to get Mhatre out, smashing him for three consecutive fours – a loft through mid-wicket, a flick, and a pull. This helped CSK reach 57 for one in the Power Play.

Mhatre seemed to have overcome his issues with short-pitched balls, as he later pulled Marco Jansen for a six.

Mhatre also punished Marcus Stoinis for two consecutive sixes – both down the ground – and the first maximum also helped him reach his fifty in 29 balls.

However, he struggled against Yuzvendra Chahal's variations.

The veteran leg-spinner foxed Mhatre, who was 17 years younger, with a series of googlies, but luck was not on the younger batsman's side.

Mhatre was dropped by Vijayakumar Vyshak inside the circle and later on 67 by Shahshank Singh in the deep.

However, luck eventually ran out as Mhatre's attempt to guide Vyshak resulted in Chahal taking a catch at short third man, with both getting their revenge.

Gaikwad was dismissed by Chahal, slowing down CSK's progress in the 10th to 15th overs, as they only managed 45 runs.

Sarfaraz Khan (32, 12 balls) tried to inject urgency into CSK's innings, scoring boundaries with his trademark shots.

However, this knock, combined with Shivam Dube's (45, 27b) strong hits, helped CSK score 64 runs in the last five overs, but it was not enough.
