There are currently 40,661 vacant positions across various government departments in Jammu and Kashmir, including 3,808 Gazetted, 24,507 Non-Gazetted, and 12,351 Multi-Tasking Staff (MTS) positions.
These figures were shared during a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo, who reviewed the status of vacancies and the progress of recruitment being carried out by the Jammu and Kashmir Public Service Commission (JKPSC) and the Jammu and Kashmir Services Selection Board (JKSSB).
During the meeting, the Chief Secretary emphasized the need to quickly fill critical vacancies to strengthen governance and improve public service delivery. He instructed administrative secretaries to hold regular follow-up meetings with departments and recruitment agencies to ensure that pending issues are resolved and positions are advertised promptly.
Commissioner Secretary of the General Administration Department, M. Raju, presented a detailed overview of vacancies across departments. The data revealed that the Health and Medical Education Department alone accounts for a significant number of vacancies, with 2,497 Gazetted, 8,088 Non-Gazetted, and 2,712 MTS positions vacant.
Other departments with significant vacancies include Agriculture Production, Power Development, Finance, Revenue, Forest, Public Works (R&B), and Youth Services and Sports.
JKSSB Chairperson Vikas Kundal informed the meeting that since 2019, the board has received 46,744 positions for recruitment, and selections for 32,956 positions have already been completed. Currently, 10,035 positions are in various stages of recruitment.
Meanwhile, JKPSC Secretary Bashir Ahmad Dar said that 1,745 Gazetted positions are currently being processed by the commission, with most selections scheduled to be completed by September 2026.
