Jamatia Files Nomination for Tripura Assembly Speaker

Jamatia Files Nomination for Tripura Assembly Speaker.webp

Agartala, March 17 BJP MLA Ram Pada Jamatia submitted his nomination papers for the post of Speaker of the Tripura Assembly on Tuesday, a senior party leader said.

Earlier, the BJP legislature party had cleared the name of Ram Pada Jamatia, an MLA of the Bagma Assembly constituency in Gomati district, as the party's nominee for the Speaker post.

The Speaker's post is vacant following the death of Biswa Bandhu Sen in December 2025.

The Tipra Motha Party (TMP), an ally of the BJP-led coalition government, has already extended support to Jamatia, a veteran tribal leader.

Taking to social media, BJP's Chief Whip in the state Assembly, Kalyani Roy, said that BJP MLA Ram Pada Jamatia, accompanied by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath, submitted his nomination papers for the post of Speaker on Tuesday.

Cooperative minister Sukla Charan Noatia, who belongs to IPFT and three MLAs of Tipra Motha, including Ranjit Debbarma, were present when Jamatia filed his nomination papers.

"I wish and greet him on his important step in the democratic process," she wrote on Facebook.

The election to the post of Speaker is scheduled to take place in the Assembly on Wednesday.

As the ruling coalition has 46 MLAs in the 60-member Tripura Assembly, the election of Jamatia as the Speaker is almost certain. The opposition camp has only 13 MLAs.
