
The President of the National Conference and former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Farooq Abdullah, narrowly escaped death when a gunman opened fire on him while he was leaving a wedding function in Jammu last night.
According to a report by Akashvani Jammu correspondent, Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary and advisor to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Nasir Aslam Wani, were accompanying Abdullah when the incident occurred. The accused, 63-year-old Kamal Singh Jamwal, son of Ajit Singh, a resident of Purani Mandi in Jammu, has been identified. Jamwal told police that he had been waiting for an opportunity to target Abdullah for the past 20 years. Omar Abdullah thanked Allah for saving his father's life, stating, "The details are still unclear, but what we know is that a man with a loaded pistol was able to get within close range and fire a shot." Police confirmed that an attempt was made on Abdullah's life while he was attending a wedding ceremony at Royal Park in Greater Kailash, Jammu. Security personnel immediately reacted, thwarted the attempt, and apprehended the accused, who was later identified as Kamal Singh. The pistol used in the crime has been seized from the accused's possession. Further investigation is underway.
