Koderma, April 5 A man, who was severely injured in an attack by a wild elephant in the Koderma district of Jharkhand, died on Sunday, officials said.

The deceased has been identified as Upendra Saw, also known as Chhotu Kumar (35), a resident of Markacho.

He was critically injured after being attacked by the elephant on Friday night, they said.

"The injured man was initially taken to RIMS Ranchi. After treatment, he was brought back to Koderma on Saturday. On Sunday morning, his health condition suddenly deteriorated, and he was taken to Sadar Hospital, where he died," said Vikash Kumar, officer in-charge of the Koderma police station.

Domchanch Range Officer Ravindra Kumar said that Rs 25,000 has been provided to the victim's family as immediate relief, while the remaining compensation amount will be given after completing the necessary formalities.

The Jharkhand government provides Rs 4 lakh as compensation in cases of death caused by an elephant.

Four people have so far been killed in elephant attacks in the district over a period of 10 days.
