Chaibasa, April 2 A fully grown elephant was found dead under mysterious circumstances in West Singhbhum district of Jharkhand on Thursday, a police officer said.

Villagers informed the forest department about the carcass of the elephant on Thursday morning.

Sub-Divisional Police Officer (Jagannathpur) Raphael Murmu said the elephant was suspected to have died on Wednesday night.

A team of forest department officials, along with a veterinary doctor, reached the spot to conduct a post-mortem to determine the exact cause of death, Murmu said.

Meanwhile, villagers said that a herd of elephants has been moving around the sub-division, causing panic among the residents.
