
Gumla (Jharkhand), April 10 A 28-year-old man was killed by a wild elephant in the Gumla district of Jharkhand on Friday, police said.
The incident took place in the forest area of Burhu village, part of the Belagarha panchayat under the jurisdiction of the Ghaghara police station, this morning, they said.
"The deceased has been identified as Anup Kumar Pandey, who was a resident of Burhu. His body has been sent to a government hospital for a post-mortem examination," said Mohan Kumar Singh, the officer-in-charge of the Ghaghara police station.
He was among the locals who were trying to scare the elephant away from the area when he was trampled to death by the animal.
Singh said that the forest department has provided the victim's family with an immediate compensation of Rs 25,000, while the remaining amount will be provided after completing some formalities.
The Jharkhand government provides a compensation of Rs 4 lakh in case of death caused by an elephant.
