Jamshedpur, April 11 A man was killed by a herd of wild elephants in the Seraikela-Kharsawan district of Jharkhand on Saturday, police said.

The incident occurred in the Chandil forest area of Saparoom village, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Tiruldih police station.

"The deceased, identified as Radha Tanti (60), a resident of Saparoom, was attacked by a herd of six elephants while he was defecating near the forest area," said Kaushal Kumar, the officer-in-charge of the Tiruldih police station. "His body has been sent to a government hospital for an autopsy. The forest department has provided the family with an immediate compensation of Rs 50,000, and the remaining amount will be provided after the necessary formalities are completed."

The Jharkhand government provides a compensation of Rs 4 lakh in cases where a person dies due to an elephant attack.
