JNU Canteens Face Menu Changes Due to Gas Supply Reduction.webp

New Delhi, March 16 The JNUSU announced on Monday that a march to the dean of students' office will demand measures to ensure the smooth and uninterrupted operation of canteens and eateries on campus, amid the LPG supply crisis.

The call for the march by the student union – originally planned for Tuesday – comes as the menus in the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) canteens continue to be affected.

According to two separate letters sent from Indraprastha Gas Limited to the heads of the Sabarmati and Lohit hostels, "…supplies to all industrial and commercial customers will be limited to 80 per cent of their average consumption over the last six months, effective from 6 am on March 11, 2026".

With a 20 per cent reduction in gas supply, the revised menu for the Lohit hostel specifies that roti and poori will not be available on certain days.

The menu specifically states that roti will not be available for Tuesday and Saturday lunch, with alternatives like "only rice" or khichadi provided instead.

A statement by the Disha Students' Organisation (DSO) highlighted that some food items have already been removed from the canteens due to the "imminent crisis"; for example, samosas are no longer served in the SIS (School of International Studies) canteen, and tea is unavailable in the TEFLAS canteen.

A student from the SIS stated, "In the coming days, if the crisis continues, the mess menus will be further altered, and the prices of food will increase. For a large number of students who come to institutions like JNU, they cannot afford the increased prices of food."

The student added that while the current changes to the mess menu are not yet a major problem, anxiety and apprehension among the student community have already begun to grow.

Student organizations such as the Disha Students' Organisation (DSO) and the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) have called on the university administration to ensure the smooth functioning of mess facilities and eateries, and to ensure that mess fees are not increased during the crisis.
