Kanpur, March 31 A 21-year-old Bachelor of Medical Lab Technology (BMLT) student has accused three of her college classmates of attempting to rape her a fortnight ago on campus, police said on Tuesday.
According to a complaint lodged on Monday, the incident took place on March 16 in a classroom of Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University.
The second-year student alleged that the three called her to an empty classroom under the pretext of sharing a meal. Once inside, they allegedly attempted to rape her.
Her cries drew the attention of some senior students who came to her rescue, she said.
A case was filed at the Kalyanpur Police Station on Monday night under sections 75 (sexual harassment) and 351(3) (criminal intimidation) of the BNS.
The police identified the three men as Vaibhav Mishra, Anuj Vishwakarma, and Ritesh Nirmal and have detained all three, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) SM Qasim Abidi.
"The statement of the female student is being recorded, and a medical examination is underway. Further action will be taken based on evidence," the DCP said.
Her victim's father alleged that the accused threatened his family with firearms and sharp weapons.
The university authorities have launched an internal inquiry and formed a committee, which is expected to submit its report within a week, Pro Vice-Chancellor Sudhir Kumar Awasthi said.
