Bengaluru, March 12 The shortage of LPG in Karnataka has raised concerns about the future of the Indira Canteens in the city, according to sources in the municipal body on Thursday.
The Indira Canteens are the flagship initiative of the Congress government, launched by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah during his previous term from 2013 to 2018.
There are approximately 180 Indira Canteens in the city, built to provide affordable meals to the urban poor. They offer breakfast for Rs 5 and meals for Rs 10.
The canteens have been functioning smoothly until now, but the ongoing conflict between Iran, Israel, and the US has cast a shadow over these government-run establishments.
According to GBA sources, the vendors at the Indira Canteen informed the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) officials that their services might be affected if the LPG crisis continues in the state.
"These vendors came to us and communicated their difficulties. Accordingly, we wrote to the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs department, requesting them to restore the service. We also raised this issue with the government today," a GBA official told
