Kavitha’s Hunger Strike Over Land Evictions.webp

Hyderabad, March 10 Telangana police on Tuesday stopped Telangana Jagruti president K Kavitha from staging an indefinite fast in Khammam, and she was taken to Hyderabad.

Kavitha will continue her protest at the office of her organization, Jagruti, sources said.

She began an indefinite fast on Monday, demanding "justice" for those displaced from a piece of land in the town.

Earlier in the day, she held a protest in Khammam, about 200 km from Hyderabad, in support of those evicted from the land by authorities last month.

"Telangana Jagruthi leader Kavitha has intensified her protest by continuing her indefinite hunger strike at the Telangana Jagruthi Central Office in Banjara Hills, demanding immediate justice for the victims of the house demolitions in Velugumatla, Khammam district," a statement from Jagruti said.

In a letter to the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, Kavitha questioned Gandhi's silence, who frequently speaks about protecting the Constitution and democracy.

She urged him to learn the facts about the Velugumatla incident and demanded that he order an independent judicial inquiry into the demolitions.

She further criticised the silence of the three ministers from Khammam district and said that if they truly have no role in these demolitions, they must come forward and ensure justice to the victims.

Observing that the land from where the people were evicted at Velugumatla is a 'Bhoodan' (donated by others in the past) land, she demanded that the district collector should give an assurance that the oustees would be given 'pattas' for the same land.

As the protest resulted in a traffic jam, police shifted her to a police station.

Telangana Jagruthi had said in a release that Kavitha was let off by the police after giving a notice to her for taking up the protest without permission. However, she reached Ambedkar Bhavan in Khammam on Monday night and began an indefinite fast, the release said on Monday.
