Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced a series of important decisions made during the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, focusing on administrative reforms and economic development.
Speaking to the media, he said that the Cabinet approved several service rules, including the Meghalaya Science and Technology Self-Service Rules, as well as the Meghalaya Integrated Economics and Statistics Service Rules, 2026, and the Meghalaya Subordinate Integrated Economics and Statistics Service Rules, 2026.
In a key fiscal move, the Cabinet approved a reduction in Value Added Tax (VAT) on methane gas used as compressed natural gas (CNG) from 14.5 percent to 5 percent. He said that this step is aimed at aligning Meghalaya with other states, enhancing competitiveness, and attracting investment by encouraging agencies to set up operations in the state.
Another major decision addressed the service conditions, seniority, and promotion of regularized ad-hoc employees. The Cabinet resolved long-standing confusion regarding pension eligibility by recognizing promotions made in accordance with established service rules. These cases will receive one-time regularization, allowing affected employees to draw salaries and pensions based on their promoted positions.
Additionally, the Cabinet approved minor changes in the naming of certain roads and localities, including corrections and renaming of a few existing roads.
