Khasi Hills District Faces Damage After Severe Weather.webp

A hailstorm accompanied by heavy rainfall and strong winds occurred on March 15, 2026, and affected many villages under the Ranikor Civil Sub-Division in the South West Khasi Hills District. Approximately 139 houses were damaged, but fortunately, no serious incidents were reported.

Official sources stated that the incident took place in the early morning, between 2:00 and 2:30 AM, when a hailstorm accompanied by heavy rainfall and strong winds damaged villages in Ranikor and the Nongjri area.

Sources revealed that, according to preliminary assessments, the villages affected by the hailstorm included Nongkulang village, with over 118 houses damaged, affecting approximately 700-800 people; Thadteja village, with 8 houses affected; Pormawdar, with 11 houses affected; and New Moilam, with 2 houses affected.

Sources also reported that preliminary information had been received from residents of Amarsang and parts of the Pormawdar village, indicating that a few more households had been affected. However, due to network issues in the area, it was difficult to obtain complete details, and it was likely that more villages had been affected.

Officials stated that a detailed assessment of the damage to houses and property was still being carried out by officials of the Ranikor C&RD Block in the field, and they were still awaiting updates due to network problems in the area.
