Kolkata, March 20 – Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain Ajinkya Rahane expressed confidence and a measured approach, emphasizing positivity, adaptability, and a strong team as KKR aims for a successful campaign in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026.
Speaking alongside head coach Abhishek Nayar, assistant coach Shane Watson, and mentor Dwayne Bravo, Rahane highlighted the strength of KKR’s batting lineup. “The batting group we have this year is excellent. Most of the batsmen, including those from overseas, are in good form and performed well in the recent World Cup. We are excited about the season and will see how our combinations work,” he said.
Despite the pressure of leadership, Rahane remained composed. “Every season presents its own challenges and expectations, whether you are a player or a captain. For me, the key has always been to stay positive. I have been leading the team since last year, and I am grateful to the franchise for giving me this responsibility. I am focused on what I can control. When there are challenges, there are also opportunities. I have learned over the years to view challenges as opportunities for growth and contribution. This mindset has guided me throughout my career, and I will always strive to give my best as a player and a captain.”
Looking ahead, Rahane emphasized the importance of momentum for KKR. “As a team, we want to start strongly and build momentum. The tournament is long, so it’s important not to peak too early. We want to play a positive brand of cricket. We have international and domestic players, all in good form. Therefore, as a team management, we are confident that the team will perform well this season.”
The presence of versatile players like Cameron Green adds flexibility to the squad, and Rahane confirmed that clear roles would evolve. “We will have detailed discussions with Cameron Green to define his role and responsibilities. He is a valuable player who can bat in any position and contribute with some overs as well. Over the next few practice games, we will gain a better understanding of how to best utilize him within our team.”
Watson highlighted the abundance of options as both a strength and a challenge. “The strength of this KKR squad lies in the incredible batting options we have this season. We have a wealth of talent to draw upon. The challenge is to find the right combinations. We want to quickly establish the initial combination and make minor adjustments throughout the tournament. Of course, with Cameron Green and his all-round abilities, we want him to make the most of every opportunity. We also have a group of experienced and energetic players. It will be exciting to see how they contribute throughout the tournament.”
With the potential absence of Andre Russell in the finishing role, Nayar sees an opportunity for others to step up. “Andre Russell has been a key player for this franchise for many years. It will be difficult to replicate his performance. However, this is a season of opportunities. Players like Rinku and Ramandeep can step up and contribute to the team’s success, as they have done before. Playing in the IPL comes with pressure, but we want our players to perform to their full potential and make a name for themselves. We have a lot of young cricketers who can establish themselves within the team.”
Nayar also reflected on his role within a star-studded support group. “The IPL provides the opportunity to work with legends like Watto (Watson), DJ (Bravo), Tim Southee, and Dre Russ (Russell). The players will benefit from the experience and guidance of these experienced individuals. For me, the focus remains the same, but I am privileged to work alongside these individuals. Their success in this format is exceptional. With such a strong leadership group, Ajinkya and I are confident that we can overcome any challenges throughout the season.”
On the importance of a strong start, especially against the Mumbai Indians, Nayar emphasized process over pressure. “As someone said, ‘You must always keep your head where your feet are’. Right now, our focus is on preparing for our match against the Mumbai Indians. We want to ensure that the team is well-prepared. As a support group, we are still assessing the strengths and weaknesses of the team. Our goal is to ensure that the team is best prepared to perform. While the expectations are high, the process of preparing for the match is more important than worrying about the outcome. No matter who we play, we want to play our best cricket.”
Watson also discussed the evolution of T20 batting. “A key factor in this evolution is the combination of players and the calibre of the team. We saw this in the last season with Sunrisers Hyderabad. Even when the conditions changed slightly at their home ground, they were focused on batting to a high score, which made it more challenging. However, cricket has not changed that much. Yes, there have been more high-risk attempts from some batters, but ultimately, you have to assess the conditions and make the most of scoring quickly, while minimizing unnecessary risks. With the batters we have, they can certainly push for higher scores.”
Rahane echoed this sentiment. “We have seen recently that the numbers are increasing, but I completely agree with Watson. As a batting unit, you still need to assess the conditions and play accordingly. You cannot think about scoring 250 before the game even starts. It’s about keeping it simple, respecting the opposition, and giving it our best. The game is evolving, but the basics remain the same.”
On the bowling front, Bravo remained optimistic despite injury concerns. “In any tournament, when key bowlers are unavailable, it’s not something you can plan for, but you have to accept it. The good thing about Indian cricket is that there is a lot of depth. They have several players who can fill the spots. Umran Malik and Kartik Tyagi are young and exciting talents. I am excited to work with this group of fast bowlers. We have the best spin duo in the competition. So, from a bowling point of view, we will be fine. Vaibhav had a fantastic season last year and has been the leader of the attack. We have lost some key players, but we feel confident that we have the ability to replace them.”
For Nayar, the immediate challenge lies in getting the right combinations. “I don’t know how the tournament will unfold, but initially, it’s about ensuring that we have a fit playing eleven and get our combinations right. When you have new combinations in the IPL, it’s important to position them effectively. I think that will be our challenge, and the rest will depend on how it unfolds. Once the foundation is in place, we can build momentum as the tournament progresses.”
KKR will kick off their IPL 2026 campaign on March 29 with a clash against the Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium.
Following their opener, KKR will return home to the Eden Gardens, where they are slated to play evening fixtures against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Punjab Kings, and Lucknow Super Giants.
